SomethingAwful.com having a DNS problem, temporary fix here

January 02nd, 2008 | Category: Internet Oopsies

Apparently, earlier this afternoon, the domain SomethingAwful.com began redirecting to a Network Solutions landing page.  No word yet on what the issue is, but it at least initially appears to be DNS related.

Did somebody hack the domain registration record and change something?  Oooooooh stay tuned to find out!

Update: After doing some digging, it initially appears that SomethingAwful.com is probably the victim of DNS poisoning.  This usually takes a while to resolve itself, as bad DNS information has spread across the Internet and now has to be corrected and allowed to re-propogate.   Anywhere from a couple of hours to days, depending on the configuration of servers across the world.  It will be interesting to hear the theories on how it happened, though.

Update #2:  The following has fixed the issue for most people.

Add the following information to your C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\HOSTS file:

216.86.148.10   somethingawful.com
216.86.148.10   www.somethingawful.com
216.86.148.10   static.somethingawful.com
216.86.148.10   secure.somethingawful.com
216.86.148.111  tenbux.somethingawful.com
216.86.148.111  forums.somethingawful.com
216.86.148.111  archives.somethingawful.com
216.86.148.111  forum.somethingawful.com
216.86.148.111  archive.somethingawful.com
216.86.148.11   fi.somethingawful.com
216.86.148.11   i.somethingawful.com
216.86.148.11   forumimages.somethingawful.com
216.86.148.11   images.somethingawful.com

Then you can go to a command prompt and type “ipconfig /flushdns” or just restart your computer.

Update #3:  There’s more instructions here too.
